One is not like the Other

I've been thinking a lot about comparison, and how much time humans spend comparing themselves to each other. I've come to realise that this practice of comparison is very big in the art world. It's almost like a disease because I feel it stumps creativity and discourages what could have been great. You see, the problem with comparing yourself to others, is that it's a never ending cycle. Someone's always going to be "better", "cooler", "smarter", "more successful." While I am guilty of falling into the bad habit of comparison, I like to get myself out of that trap, by reflecting on a couple of things:
Understand that no one can do it like YOU. This is not to puff up your ego and make you arrogant, but it's just coming to the logical understanding that not one human in this world is alike, and no one can do things the way YOU do. You are unique. Your thoughts and experiences are unique, and you need to value that. Just because somebody paints well, doesn't mean you can't try to paint too! There's no such things as DIBS on inspiration or creativity.
Don't try to be someone else. Draw from your own experience and feelings. Make it come from somewhere true.
Many people can be good at something, you don't have to be the only one, or THEY don't have to be the only one.
Try not to see others as competition, but inspiration. Learn from them!
Your art is an expression of your thoughts and ideas, and not a summary of who you are as a person. Sometimes your expressions don't come out perfectly, but that doesn't mean the idea wasn't valid or important. Even scientists and mathematicians had to rewrite their equations many times before they hit breakthroughs. And the same thing applies to artists!
I can't say I always follow my advice, but I hope that some of the tips listed above can help encourage other artists and creatives to keep on working at their craft and pursuing their love of art. I would never want see someone discouraged to do art, just because they think someone else can do it better. I lived with that mentality for a while, and am just realising that it's not always the best solution. Sometimes people want to listen to what you have to say / express! So don't be afraid to share!
Till next time, auf wiedersehen! (that's goodbye in German, btw) :D
